If I cut this chocolate coin into three equal parts and eat two of them, what proportion do I have left?

Answer: a third. No, 0 per cent – because my brother has eaten the remainder, while complaining that I had had twice as much as him.

Primary schools across the country will be finding similar ways to introduce learning opportunities (and the occasional bad joke) into the run-up to the festive season this week.

Most will be too busy to take notice of the Ofsted annual report and the primary SATs performance tables that are due out in the coming days, no doubt accompanied by headlines about the success and failure of schools individually and collectively.

If either brings your school glad tidings, by all means shout about it – engage an angel chorus if necessary! But any league table must be by definition have a bottom half. If you are in the relegation zone, make sure that your school community knows the reasons why, and what you are doing about it. Good communication with parents is vital if you are to survive the occasional (snow)storm.
